Supporting Startup Policy Reform Across Africa

April 09, 2023 1 Minute Read

Since 2023, DigitA has tracked and contributed to the evolution of Startup Act reforms across multiple African countries, supporting the shift from policy aspiration to structured implementation. Our engagements in Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria reflect a consistent focus on strengthening innovation policy design and execution.

In Uganda, we supported advocacy efforts around the development of a Startup Act, emphasising how coherent, well-coordinated policy frameworks can help founders transition from early-stage survival to sustainable growth. In Sierra Leone, we contributed to the development of a National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Strategy, aligning startup development with broader national development priorities.

In Nigeria, our work extended to supporting state-level adoption of the Nigeria Startup Act, demonstrating how frameworks can be localised at the subnational level through structured coordination, stakeholder engagement, and well coordinated implementation processes.

As Startup Act reforms continue to evolve across the continent, we remain engaged in supporting governments and ecosystem stakeholders to design practical, context-specific frameworks that strengthen coordination and improve implementation.
